Asia. Recently, it appears that the US is also taking second billing to Europe and Asia in the area of federally funded fusion reseach. It appears that, in addition to the general points mentioned in 2.1, the way the current US federal research is conducted further seems to spur this problem.
However, it might be the case that we are seeing the dawn of privately funded fusion developments in the US. Why is this?
The reasoning that the rising hope of a private alternative must be due to the tightening of the Federal Government funding seems to be only partially correct. Isn’t it the case and a more positive reason that a new research methodology and private development has been devised? Let us dwell on this point further.
I started my scietific career as a student of Professor Norman Rostoker in Irvine in 1973. I will never forget the moment when I arrived from Japan at the Orange County airport in September of 1973 and there stood a man with dark sunglasses in a Hawaiian shirt and casual sandals to receive me at the gate with the bright Southern California sun on his back. With my Japanaese eyes, the man appeared to me at that time as if he were a gangster. In any case, does a famous professor greet a fresh-off-the-boat student from Japan at the airport? Never heard of? I was deeply moved by his character. He cracked one joke after another during the ride in his car from the airport. He was informal, humorous, and affectionately charming. In later years, I had the additional luck of encountering and learning from two more giants, John Dawson and Marshall Rosenbluth. Rostoker, however, right after I met him, presented me with the statement “Toshi, the construction of basic plasma theory is already over. From now its applications (perhaps it may be said societal impact here).” At the University of Tokyo my then mentor Professor Ichimaru advised me to go to Rostoker if I wished to study plasma theory in the US. Thus listening to Norman’s declaration, I was frozen for days from the shock it presented to me. The professor was speaking this dictum not arrogantly at all, but rather friendly and matter of fact. Receiving such personal education made me who I am.
I returned from Europe to the US in 2011 and accepted the position of Chief Science Officer of TAE. I have been soaked and baptized by Rostoker and TAE’s philosophy ever since 1973.
2.3 Rotoker’s philosophy
Let us examine the philosophy that he had generated after many years’ of laborious efforts and that also permeates TAE. Rostoker was a physicist with stupendous
