Page 12 - Progress minimizing fast-ion charge-exchange loss associated with gas injection on C-2W
P. 12

 Can CV fueling be optimized?
 • Particle and energy confinement may be improved by injecting gas inside the CV “magnetic mirror” rather than in the formation section.
• To be successful, competing objectives must be balanced: • Minimize fast ion loss.
• Ionize close to axis to maximize penetration into FRC core.
• Ionize in low B-field region to maximize SOL mirror confinement.
• Several options studied computationally and experimentally: • Radial injection from midplane, end-bell, and mirror throat
• Tangential injection (27 cm impact parameter) from mirror throat
