The results of the simulation are presented in Figs. 1–3. Fig. 1 shows the plasma pressure, along with the normalized- magnetic-field vectors, at 50, 100, and 150 μs, corresponding to the formation, evolution, and equilibrium of the FRC.
The current is initially due to the azimuthal flow of ions. Field reversal starts as early as 10 μs and the applied-magnetic field is completely reversed by 40 μs when an oblate FRC plasma is established. The plasma then begins to compress
