TAE Technologies’ statement on US nuclear fusion advancement

Today we congratulate our colleagues at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, many of whom we’ve known and worked alongside for decades in the pursuit of fusion.

The scientific break-even advancement represents a theory made reality. Fusion has long been dubbed the “holy grail” of clean energy and this advance brings us one step closer to true viability. Today’s net energy milestone validates a major breakthrough for the entire global field of fusion.

“This marks the dawn of the fusion age,” said Michl Binderbauer, CEO of TAE Technologies. “It’s a crucial step that validates a theory and bolsters our growing field of work in fusion energy. As we reach an inflection point for research and gain vital support, we are primed to invent a reality powered by commercial fusion energy.”

Harnessing the power of the stars for use on Earth is the task at hand for fusion scientists. Fusion, the opposite of fission, is nuclear power with no risk of meltdown—and it is what powers our nearest star, the Sun. Once the research is harnessed for commercial application, fusion would offer on-demand baseload energy, unlike intermittent power sources such as wind or solar.

TAE’s vision of fusion energy has always been focused on delivering what commercial applications require: clean, non-radioactive, scalable fusion energy. Importantly, the type of fusion TAE is pursuing for commercial use relies on an abundant fuel: hydrogen-boron. TAE is currently constructing its sixth research reactor, Copernicus, and is on target to bring commercial fusion to the grid in the 2030s.

TAE Technologies is a fusion research vanguard and private company based in Southern California.

About TAE Technologies

TAE Technologies (pronounced T-A-E) was founded in 1998 to develop commercial fusion power with the cleanest environmental profile. The company’s pioneering work represents the fastest, most practical, and economically competitive solution to bring abundant clean energy to the grid. With over 1,800 patents filed globally and over 1,100 granted, $1.2 billion in private capital raised, five generations of National Laboratory-scale devices built and two more in development, and an experienced team of over 400 employees, TAE is now on the cusp of delivering this transformational energy source capable of sustaining the planet for thousands of years.

The company’s revolutionary technologies have produced a robust portfolio of commercial innovations in large adjacent markets such as power management, energy storage, electric mobility, fast charging, life sciences, and more. TAE is based in California, and maintains international offices in the UK and Switzerland. Multidisciplinary and mission-driven by nature, TAE is leveraging proprietary science and engineering to create a bright future.
