Internal Magnetic Field Measurements of Translated and Merged Field-Reversed Configuration Plasmas in the FAT-CM Device

Internal Magnetic Field Measurements of Translated and Merged Field-Reversed Configuration Plasmas in the FAT-CM Device

August 2018 | H. Gota | Review of Scientific Instruments | Paper

Field-reversed configuration (FRC) Amplification via Translation–Collisional Merging (FAT-CM) experiments have recently commenced to study physics phenomena of colliding and merged FRC plasma states.

Calibration and applications of visible imaging cameras on the C-2U advanced beam-driven field-reversed configuration device

Calibration and applications of visible imaging cameras on the C-2U advanced beam-driven field-reversed configuration device

August 2018 | E. M. Granstedt | Review of Scientific Instruments | Paper

Two filtered, fast-imaging instruments, with radial and axial views, respectively, were used on the C-2U device to visualize line emission from impurities and hydrogenic neutrals.

Magnetic diagnostic suite of the C-2W field-reversed configuration experiment

Magnetic diagnostic suite of the C-2W field-reversed configuration experiment

July 2018 | T. Roche | Review of Scientific Instruments | Paper

A fundamental component of any magnetically confined fusion experiment is a firm understanding of the magnetic field. The increased complexity of the C-2W machine warrants an equally enhanced diagnostic capability.

Measuring dynamic fast ion spatial profiles with fusion protons in the Madison Symmetric Torus

Measuring dynamic fast ion spatial profiles with fusion protons in the Madison Symmetric Torus

July 2018 | R. M. Magee | Review of Scientific Instruments | Paper

Neutral beam injected fast ions play a dominant role in both the field reversed configuration (FRC) at TAE Technologies and the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) reversed field pinch (RFP), making fast ion diagnosis a major pillar of both research programs.

Performance Improvement of a Magnetized Coaxial Plasma Gun by adopting Iron-Core Bias Coil and Pre-Ionization Systems

Performance Improvement of a Magnetized Coaxial Plasma Gun by adopting Iron-Core Bias Coil and Pre-Ionization Systems

March 2018 | T. Edo | Plasma and Fusion Research | Paper

A magnetized coaxial plasma gun (MCPG) is utilized to generate a compact toroid (CT). An MCPG-type CT injector had been developed as a particle refueling system for C-2/C-2U field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas. To inject CTs repetitively for a long-lived plasma, the injector has been upgraded.

Theory of ion dynamics and heating by magnetic pumping in FRC plasma

Theory of ion dynamics and heating by magnetic pumping in FRC plasma

July 2018 | J. Egedal | Physics of Plasmas | Paper

A new mathematical framework is developed for efficient evaluation of ion heating during magnetic pumping of field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas. The topology of ion trajectories is examined through the use of action variables applied to a typical FRC equilibrium.

Experimental characterization of Alfven modes in a field-reversed configuration plasma

Experimental characterization of Alfven modes in a field-reversed configuration plasma

June 2018 | R.M. Magee | Nuclear Fusion | Paper

High power neutral beam injection into the C-2U advanced field-reversed configuration (FRC) stimulates at least three distinct energetic particle modes, none of which have been linked to
a performance limitation. Here we present an experimental characterization of one mode in particular, a high frequency mode ( f > fci ) observed in the decaying phase of the FRC.
